That night we had a dinner reservation at the on-site restaurant. As Bea and I left our room to head down, my little black dress skimmed my knees, and the lace-edged vee neckline added the perfect blend of femininity and mystery. Black, jeweled sandals completed my resort casual dinner look. But on the inside, I was nothing near casual. Getting dressed for a nice dinner out was always fun, but tonight it felt like I was dressing for Jasper. Would he like my dress? Would he appreciate the effort Iâd put in to look nice for him? I blew out a nervous breath.
âSo, how do you want to play the seating arrangements tonight? Couples? Girls versus guys? Let the chips fall where they may?â Iâd caught Bea up on the situation when we were in the bathroom curling our hair, and sheâd squealed so loudly that Iâm pretty sure the guys heard us through the wall. I wasnât going to confirm that, though, because, awkward.
âI think Iâm going to let him take the lead. If he sits next to George, no problem. If he sits next to me, excellent.â
âHeâs going to sit next to you, because heâs not an idiot,â she announced as our sandals slapped down the stairs.
âI guess weâll find out. Are you liking the trip so far?â I asked, changing the subject to more solid ground.
âLoving it! Canât wait to get out tomorrow and sprawl on the beach like a lizard.â
âWhy a lizard?â I wrinkle my eyebrows in confusion. Lizards arenât usually associated with the beach, unless you count iguanas.
âYou know that feeling you get where youâre outside soaking up the sun, and it feels divine? Like youâre just absorbing the heat and you can feel it all over like a magical blanket of vitamin-D-infused goodness?â
âBea, Iâm a redhead. The sun doesnât love me like that.â
âTrue. Anyways, I always thought that must be what lizards feel like when theyâre out there lying on a rock.â
âYou are weird, but I still love you,â I responded as we arrived at the restaurant.
She shook her head at me, but didnât argue. She crossed the parquet foyer to Georgeâs side, and took his outstretched hand. I locked eyes with Jasper, and his genuine smile warmed me from my toes to the tips of my hair. Who needs to be a lizard in the sunâIâll bask in the glow of Jasper, instead.
I slowly crossed over to him, and he reached out a hand and ran it from my elbow to my wrist; the soft touch, a whisper of promise.
âYou look absolutely ravishing this evening, Daphne.â
Suddenly shy, I ducked my head. âThank you, you look pretty fantastic, yourself,â I said, running my eyes up his khaki shorts and crisp white button-up. âIsland life seems to agree with you so far.â
âOh, I could definitely get used to this,â he agreed, and linked his fingers with mine, giving them a little squeeze.
âRight this way, please,â a yellow-uniformed hostess called, and led us into the dining room.
